Turn Your Loft Into A Bathroom

If you’ve ever looked at your empty loft space and dreamed of doing something with it, you’re not alone. Next to the traditional extension, a loft conversion is the most popular large scale renovation homeowners in the UK carry out.

If you’re investing your hard earned money in all that building work, of course, it’s a good idea to have a purpose. A loft can be a great place to arrange a stylish guest room for visitors, build a beautiful library to relax and unwind in, or treat the kids to a space of their own with a playroom.

Another option is to convert your loft into an en suite, luxury bathroom. This has a number of benefits. Not only can you redesign the space to your own specifications and create something new and unconstrained, you’ll have a place to relax and pamper yourself for years to come.

If this sounds like your perfect loft conversion, there are a few things you need to consider before you begin, however:

The Size Of Your Loft

A lot is going to depend on how big your house is and how much loft space you have. What looks pretty roomy when you step up the ladder into the attic can suddenly become a whole lot smaller when the building work is finished.

You need to take into account the height of a new floor and the insulated walls that will be installed. In some properties, that construction work can reduce the amount of space you have for your bathroom by as much as a quarter.

Shower Or Bath Installation?

The centre of attention in your bathroom is going to be your bath or shower. You may be lucky enough to have enough room to choose both, but most homes are restricted to having one or the other.

When it comes to showers there are plenty of attractive options. You might want a walk-in shower, a design choice that is becoming increasingly attractive in the UK but is pretty common all around Europe. You may like to install an enclosed power shower and go for a modern cabinet. For smaller areas, there are more traditional shower cabinet options.

There are plenty of choices for baths too. If you have always wanted a stand-alone bath that sits out in the middle of the room, the loft is the perfect place to have this installed. Maybe you want a large bath that you can really lie back and relax in, though you will have to take into account the weight of it when filled with water and reinforce the floor accordingly.

Space is going to either limit you here or make the skies the limit. Don’t forget, loft rooms generally have sloping walls so a shower may not be an option or could have limitations where it can be placed.

Water Pressure

Whilst water pressure is not always a problem for homes, this often depends on your location. Generally, the higher up within the building you climb, the lower you will find the water pressure to be, and this can be amplified if you live up on a hill, for example. As the water has higher to climb, it arrives with less force than it might at the foot of the hill. Water pressure is something your plumber will be able to assess. In most cases, if there is an issue with the supply, a pump can be installed to improve things.

Storage In Your Loft Bathroom

With the typically-sloping walls found in lofts, installing any type of storage such as cupboards is going to be affected. It usually requires the fitting of bespoke cabinets though these can look fantastic if you follow the lines of the loft design. As you might expect, bigger spaces will have more options.

DIY vs Professional Installation

Any loft conversion is a pretty big undertaking. A bathroom or showroom has the added requirement for plumbing and water supply so it’s not really a job that you can do on your own unless you have the requisite skill level.
